Despite music, dance, and entertainment, this year’s St Luke’s Church summer fair will be remembered for the sun, fun, and smiles, says Andrew Burdett.
Somehow, tucking into extra helpings of turkey at the Christmas dinner table seems forgivable because, by noon the next day, I’ll have walked off the excess with the church Boxing Day ramble. In theory.
With the Bishop of Oxford due to retire in October, he’s walking the breadth of the Diocese, following the Thames Path. Andrew Burdett joined Saturday’s leg.
At the St Luke’s Church vicarage, Revd Sally hosted a garden party this afternoon to raise funds for the church. With a glass of Prosecco on arrival, the event had been given a ‘Glitz and Glamour’ theme, and many of the attendees had dressed up for the afternoon.
I’ll be honest: I’ve had a good Christmas. A gastronomically very good Christmas. This was made clear to me earlier today when, half-an-hour into my second stint at the Maidenhead Swimarathon, I was secretly getting rather...
At the end of the St Luke’s Christmas Tree Festival, it’s wonderful to have welcomed such a range of people. Young people. Old people. Sunday-morning regulars. People who’d never stepped foot in St Luke’s before. All had come to admire the Christmas trees on display.
I’m exhausted, but really rather pleased. The latest edition of InSpire is done, finished, and printed – and, best of all, it’s ready in time for Christmas.
Be in no doubt: Christmas is on the way. Shops are staying open later, illuminations around the country are being switched on in grandiose ceremonies – and, for me, nothing hails the countdown to Christmas more than the Combined Charities Fair at Maidenhead Town Hall.
