Royal Wedding: My Pick of the Cartoons – 1 May 2011

As the last souvenir supplements of Royal Wedding-themed goodness roll off the press, here’s my pick of the best newspaper cartoons from recent days.

Benrik Pitch, The Guardian, 25 April 2011

BENRICK PITCH_25 April 2011 - Contingency Wedding Coverage

I commented myself on the global “media frenzy” surrounding the wedding in a blog post on Tuesday. The brilliant Benrik Pitch cartoon in The Guardian questions what would happen in the event of Prince William being stood up at the altar.

Matt, The Daily Telegraph, 30 April 2011

MATT_30 April 2011 - Yesterday?!!!

One of the first times I’ve ever genuinely laughed out loud to a political cartoon, this brilliant Matt cartoon (published on Saturday, the day after the wedding) reminds me of this T-shirt from SnorgTees. It’s a very similar idea, but the former is better pulled off.

The Daily Cartoon, The Independent, 1 May 2011

THE DAILY CARTOON_1 May 2011 - Happy Couple Unhappy Couple

Not anything like as good as the other two, but relating both the Royal Wedding and the upcoming AV referendum on 5 May, it shows ‘the happy couple’ (William and Catherine) and ‘the unhappy couple’ (Nick Clegg and David Cameron) as the latter bicker “yes” and “no” to the AV method.
