Capt AG Burdett
Capt Arthur Burdett, my grandfather, was a member of the Royal Engineers during WWII. He was awarded the George Medal for conspicuous gallantry.
The award was made for his actions, which saved a ship from possibly being sunk while carrying troops to Sword Bay, Normandy as part of the D-Day offensive of World War II. The ship received a direct hit by a bomb which penetrated into its bunkers, but did not explode. Capt Burdett was on board as part of a Royal Engineers Field Company.
